Fall Birding with Friends of Fish Creek Park – September 2017

Square

The Fall birding course with Friends of Fish Creek Park began in September.  I found photographing birds in September challenging – many had already left for the winter but there were still enough leaves on the trees to make it difficult to see the smaller birds that remained.

Of the larger birds, the Blue Heron was the most cooperative of its kind that I have seen so far, giving quite a show as it bathed high up in a tree. The Great Horned Owl, which was well concealed by leaves was not pleased to be gawked at by a bunch of birders. It twisted its ears and glared at us as hard as it could.

The Greater Yellow Legs showed up in a few locations, also well concealed by the colours of their surroundings. Early on there were still warblers around, easier to hear than to see!

Of course, down by the river, there are always gulls and I am still working on sorting out which type is which.

Mallards are also plentiful. I know that the female is less colourful than the male, but the more closely I see their markings, the more taken I am by them.

If you click on any of the photos they will open in a larger view that you can scroll through. As always, if you would like to comment on a photo or add information about any of the birds you see here, please use the comment function to send me a message!
