Fall Birding October

Square

October was not the most inviting month for birding, at least to me. It was often cold and there didn’t seem to be a lot of birds willing to come close enough to give a good photograph. Even so, there were a few birds that I had not seen before, starting with the Pileated Woodpecker. This is the bird of “Woody the Woodpecker” fame. (Yes, I am sure that I am dating myself.) It is so much larger than the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers.

Then there were the Greater Yellow Legs, that didn’t show up last year but seemed to be everywhere in October. The same held true for Rusty Blackbirds.

There were a few others that I had never seen before, including Hooded Mergansers and two kinds of Grebes. I also got my first really good look at Trumpeter Swans.

One that was not new, and I know they are a noisy pain, but I still think that the colour of the Magpie is quite appealing.
