Birds in June

Square

The birding in June turned up a few new birds for me but also several that are quite familiar now. The Goldfinch below had to have left its perch when this image was taken, but for the life of me, I don’t know how it was aloft with no wings showing! There is an Eastern Phoebe that seems to like the Weaselhead area because when it shows itself, it is in the same area every time. Cedar Waxwings were showing up all over the place. Now if I could just find a Bohemian one . . .

This Downy Woodpecker was involved in some serious acrobatics. It seems that the little birds can turn themselves in all different directions while still holding onto a branch.

First time views included the Wood Peewee, the Flycatcher and the Eastern King Bird. All in all, based on the names, I think I’d rather be a King Bird.  The Yellowheaded Blackbirds were a familiar sight. You can see the male on a bush with two little ones but this is the first time I’ve seen the female with the dull brown and just a little yellow on the chest and head.

The Osprey are back in the boat launch area of Fish Creek Park. They were the only ones I saw last year, while it seemed I was seeing Great Horned Owls everywhere. This year has been the exact opposite. Heaven forbid, the sight of such a gorgeous bird should ever seem commonplace!

One bird that I don’t think I will ever get used to seeing airbourne is the Pelican. It just looks too big and awkward to be able to fly and yet, there it goes, a flying dinosaur.
